Allen “The Hedgehog” Greenway Interview
In continuing with our goal of representing the North Carolina MMA scene to the fullest, MMA4Real had the chance to catch up with Allen “The Hedgehog” Greenway. Allen will be fighting in the main event of the Elite Championship Cagefighting event in Lenoir, NC, on February 7th. Allen talks to us about how he got into MMA, being unusually tall, and sends a message to his upcoming opponent.
Kelvin Hunt-Allen, I’d like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with us. Tell us a little about Allen growing up, and how you got into MMA?
Allen Greenway-I am originally from a small town called Woodruff, SC. Where everyone knows everyone. You couldn’t tell by looking at me, but I am a mean trumpet player and was in the marching band for 5 years. I grew up with my younger brother of 5yrs, that also became a fighter but recently joined the Air Force. I’ve always been a competitive person and needed a outlet for the streak as I got older. Just watching the fighters back then I was inspired by what they did, and always loved the fact of maybe one day getting paid to do that.

Sérgio Cunha On BJ Penn’s Strategy For GSP

Muay Thai coach Sérgio Cunha had the opportunity to help BJ Penn train for his upcoming fight at UFC 94 against Georges St. Pierre. Speaking with Tatame, Cunha gave a brief synopsis of what Penn’s strategy will be against GSP:
These eight months of work were very good, with two training sessions daily. We’ve set up a plan for this fight, the strategy is to shorten the distance and neutralize St. Pierre, who kicks very well, has a strong game of poke. The priority is to fight stand, in short distance, boxing, knee and elbow. Of course, if he has a chance to knockout and do his game he’ll, but he’ll go after the knockout or submission all the time.
This is pretty much his only way to win in my opinion, as I pointed out yesterday in my GSP/BJ Penn breakdown. Penn has great take down defense and needs to keep the fight standing, but it will be a tall task against GSP.
Isn’t Over-Saturation Hurting MMA Apparel Companies?
I agree with the initial piece that sparked a rebuttal in which you’ll find below. Robert Joyner of MMAPayout speaks with a manager/agent within the MMA world in regards to sponsors(namely MMA clothing/apparel companies in this piece) being hurt by the recession. The manager indicates that the recession is having a direct impact on the fighters:
While in a lot of ways I agree with the quote today on Gen Y. BUT, the affects are still hitting the athletes. A lot of clothing companies were started using home equity and 401K’s to get in on the phenomenon that is MMA only to find out it is a UFC world. This is where the effect is coming from the heloc (home equity lines of credit) lines are used up, 401Ks drawn down. (An MMA Apparel company owner) told me an event he is only sponsoring (Fighter X) because they gave him terms, another clothing company sent me an email about sponsoring one of my fighters and said “my tax refund will be back by that fight so I think I can swing it”. (Apparel owner) told us he hopes he can sell enough shirts from the exposure that night to pay the fighter. The fact is a lot of the money is drying up. Guys are finding less and less “non-fight gear” companies and more and more restrictions from fight gear companies. Most of the MMA apparel companies will tell you they have a hard tome measuring the ROI and the fact that fighters switch to one brand and then to another is desensitizing them to the branding anyways.

BJ Penn Talks Fight Strategy For UFC 94
Towards the end of the video, it’s interesting to note that BJ Penn said he would probably defend the lightweight title before the welterweight title if he were to get past GSP at UFC 94. While it’s true that lightweight title hasn’t been defended since his win over Sean Sherk at UFC 84. Thiago Alves has been waiting for a title shot at the welterweight belt longer than Kenny Florian has for the lightweight belt technically. Either way, I’d be interested in seeing both those fights.
